Bank Accounts FAQs

How do I apply for a St.George account?

It’s easy to apply. You can open a St.George account in a number of ways:

For customers who live outside NSW, you can open an account by downloading an application form or calling us on 13 33 30 for an application form to be sent by mail. When your form is completed, you can provide identification at any Australia Post Office using Bank@Post™ to complete your application.

What documentation do I need to open an account?

If you are a new customer, you will need to bring identification to a St.George branch. Common forms of identification include your passport, birth certificate, Australian citizenship certificate, driver’s licence, pension or government health cards and Medicare card. One form of identification provided must contain your full name and either your residential address (not a PO Box) and/or date of birth.

If you have existing accounts with St.George and have previously supplied St.George with identification, you generally will not need to supply this again to open an additional account.

The identification listed above is a guide only. For further details, check out the identification system. For more information, please contact a St.George Branch, or call us on 13 33 30.

How do I choose an account that suits my needs?

Before you choose a bank account, think about how you are most likely to access your money and whether you want to minimise fees or earn interest. For example, do you want unlimited access to your account, or do you need a cheque-book? Will you mostly access your money at a branch, or do you prefer to use electronic banking? Do you want to keep your fees low or be rewarded for saving?

Use our Account Selector or Account Comparison Table to help you choose the product that best suits your banking or savings needs.

How long does it take to complete an online application?

Depending on the account you are opening and the information we require from you, an online application should take you 5–10 minutes to complete.

Can a joint account be set up online?

Yes, you can set up a joint account online.

What happens after I submit an online application?

Once your application has been successfully submitted, you’ll receive an automatic email confirming your application number and setting out the next steps.

If you are a new customer you will need to complete the process by visiting a St.George branch to show your identification and register your signature with us.

Then once your account has been opened you will receive a Welcome Pack in the mail. This contains Your Guide to Fees and Charges and Terms and Conditions and other information about St.George.

Why can’t I apply for some accounts online?

While you can download some application forms online, for many accounts you need to provide proof of your eligibility at a St.George branch in order to open the account. Under Government legislation, customers under 18 years of age cannot apply for any bank accounts online. These accounts can be opened by visiting any St.George branch with your identification requirements or by calling 13 33 30.

Can I start using an account that I open online immediately?

As soon as you have been issued with a BSB and an account number, you can begin using your account.

Can I get an overdraft facility if I am a new customer?

St.George does offer an overdraft facility to eligible customers on certain accounts. Find out if you're eligible when you open your account.

Can I use any St.George account for business purposes?

St.George personal bank accounts are designed for personal use and cannot be used for business purposes. We have a comprehensive range of business accounts that are specifically designed for business use.
